What seems obvious today has its origins in the 1950s
when the democratization of consumption in the food sector began. In 1953, the young Karl Wlaschek founded the discount perfumery chain WKW (Warenhandel Karl Wlaschek), which already had 45 branches by 1960. Karl Wlaschek decided to transfer his successful discount concept to the food sector. A year later, the company was renamed “BILLA” (“Billiger Laden,” meaning “cheap store”) and switched to a self-service system, which was revolutionary at the time.
Austria now has a dense network of over 1,000 BILLA stores and around 18,400 employees. Moving away from pure shopping markets, the aim today is to offer customers markets with a shopping experience. That is why BILLA launched a comprehensive branch offensive in 1997: since then, more than 60 branches in Austria have been renovated each year to modern standards for the benefit of customers and employees. In addition to the BILLA stores, BILLA has also developed new formats: At BILLA BOX, customers can get freshly prepared snacks, while at BILLA CORSO they can find everything they need to satisfy their taste buds and enjoy fine flavors. The ongoing development of customer service has been a central theme for BILLA since the BILLA customer club was founded in 1997. Today, with 3.8 million members, the customer club is the most successful in Austria.
